Curriculum

INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY (Semester One) DAILY

This class serves as the foundational starting point for students beginning their study of philosophy. The class will focus on topics found in classical philosophical writings, such as the nature of truth and knowledge, mind and body, freedom and determinism, and right and wrong. The class will last for one hour.

CRITICAL THINKING (Semester Two) DAILY

This class will introduce and explore the main principles and procedures of critical thinking, which include differentiating between good and bad opinions, recognizing mutual misconceptions, forming solid and convincing arguments, distinguishing between rational and irrational reasoning, evaluating evidence, understanding the nature of scientific, moral, and legal rationale, analyzing surveys and statistical theories, grasping concepts of likelihood, and determining how to act in ambiguous situations. The class will last for one hour.

ETHICS (Semester One) DAILY

This class will allow students to concentrate on ideas and concerns, such as the nature of worth, obligation, correct and incorrect, the virtues of life, citizen privileges, public fairness, and presentations on particular issues of individual and social conduct. Topics will include freedom and its confines, civil disobedience, global & domestic terrorism and the ethics of war, animal rights, and environmental ethics. The class will last for one hour.

AFRICAN AMERICAN PHILOSOPHIES (Semester Two) DAILY

This class will allow students to examine major African American philosophers; this would include W.E.B. Du Bois, Cornel West, Angela Davis, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS (Semester One and Semester Two) DAILY

The math course will remain the same, in accordance with the current US/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday.

AFRICAN  PHILOSOPHY (Semester One) DAILY

This class will allow students to examine major philosophers from ancient Africa; this would include Ptahhotep, Imhotep, and much more. The class will last for one hour.

PHILOSOPHY OF MIND (Semester Two) DAILY

This course will examine various philosophical difficulties related to modern representations of the mind (mind/body dualism; mind/brain identity theories; behaviorism; functionalism and artificial intelligence; eliminative naturalism and folk psychology; and biological naturalism). The class will also explore modern philosophical interpretations of personhood and personal identity, focusing primarily on narrative explanations of the self. The class will last for one hour.
